Private-Label Chocolate Manufacturing Process

From your first enquiry to the final packaged product, our private-label manufacturing process combines technical expertise, food safety compliance, and careful product development to ensure your chocolate brand launches successfully.

Below is an overview of how we work with clients to transform an idea into a finished, retail-ready chocolate product.

OUR PROCESS

We work with brands, retailers and entrepreneurs looking to develop a unique chocolate product under their own label.

At this stage we gather key information such as the type of product you want to create, your target market, estimated order volumes, packaging format, and desired launch timeline. This allows us to determine whether the product is suitable for our manufacturing capabilities and minimum order quantities. At this stage we can give you a proposed product budget and a timeline for the next stage, the product development stage.

1. Concept development

To begin development, we work with you to define the precise specifications of your chocolate product.

This includes selecting the chocolate type (dark, milk, white, vegan), cocoa percentage, sugar or sugar alternatives, fillings or inclusions, and any functional ingredients such as vitamins, or supplements. We also review allergen requirements, product weight, nutritional targets, and the intended retail positioning of the product.
A detailed product brief ensures that both the client and our technical team have a clear plan for development.

2. Development brief

Our chocolate technologist develops a formulation that delivers the desired flavour, texture, and shelf stability while remaining suitable for large-scale production.

During this stage we create small test batches in our development kitchen. These prototypes allow us to test ingredient compatibility, assess texture and flavour balance, and ensure the product meets UK and EU food safety and labelling regulations.
The result is your prototype chocolate product ready for sampling.

If required, we will work with you to design and create custom moulds for your product to ensure a unique shape.

3. Recipe  development

Samples are produced and sent to the client for evaluation.

Clients assess factors such as taste, sweetness balance, mouthfeel, filling consistency, and overall appearance. In many cases there may be one or two refinement cycles before the final recipe is approved.

Once the product meets the client’s expectations, we move to commercial planning.

4. Sampling and Product Approval

With the product specification confirmed, we prepare a detailed finished product quotation based on the production volumes we have discussed including any set-up or tooling requirements.

The quotation outlines minimum order quantities, pricing per unit, lead times, and payment terms. Once the client confirms the order and issues a purchase order, we begin preparing for production.

5. Costing and Commercial

Packaging plays a crucial role in retail success. We work with your designers to finalise wrapper design, retail cartons, and shelf-ready packaging formats.

All packaging artwork is reviewed to ensure compliance with UK and EU labelling regulations covering ingredient declarations, allergen statements, nutritional information, barcodes, best-before dating and distribution requirements.

Once the artwork is approved, packaging materials are sent for print.

6. Packaging development

Following order confirmation, our procurement team sources all raw materials required for production.

This typically includes the specific chocolate selected for your product, flavours, fillings, nuts, nut butters and any functional ingredients. All ingredients are sourced from approved suppliers and undergo strict quality control and traceability checks upon arrival.

Only once ingredients pass quality assurance are they released for production.

7. Ingredient procurement

Before manufacturing begins, our operations team schedules the production run.

This includes preparing moulds, organising ingredient batches, scheduling production lines, and ensuring allergen controls are in place where necessary. Detailed production planning ensures efficient manufacturing while maintaining strict food safety standards.

8. Production planning

Chocolate production is a carefully controlled process designed to create the smooth texture and flavour consumers expect.

The process starts with melting the required chocolate and preparing any fillings or inclusion required. The chocolate is tempered to stabilise the cocoa butter crystals. This step ensures the finished product has the glossy appearance and crisp snap associated with high-quality chocolate.

The tempered chocolate is then deposited into moulds or used to create filled products such as bars, truffles, or nut butter cups. Once moulded, the chocolate passes through cooling tunnels where it solidifies before being released from the moulds. Our team of chocolatiers quality check continuously to the highest BRCGS standard.

Once the chocolate has been produced and inspected, it moves to the packaging stage.

Products are wrapped using high-speed wrapping machines and then packed into retail cartons, display boxes, or bulk shipping trays depending on the client’s requirements.

Each product is coded with batch numbers and best-before dates to ensure full traceability.

10. Packaging

Quality control is integrated throughout the entire manufacturing process.

Checks include visual inspections, weight verification, metal detection, packaging integrity checks, and microbiological / allergen testing where required. These procedures ensure that every batch meets strict food safety and quality standards before it is released.

Our premises and procedures conform to the BRCGS standard to guarantee safety and legal compliance. BRCGS compliance is often a mandatory requirement and gives our customers a “passport” to major retailers and international custom.

11. Quality Assurance

Finished products are palletised, paperwork prepared and released for collection subject to final quality checks.

Once orders are ready, products are dispatched to retailers, distributors, your warehouse or fulfilment centres according to the client’s logistics requirements.
